Chapter Ten

Despite the risks he faced during each trip, Pino continued to smuggle Jews through the Alps and towards safety. One of the groups he escorted included a female violinist who played at La Scala before. Pino had also met her at one of the house parties hosted by his father. They left the retreat at two in the morning and began their journey of a steep 122-meter climb and descent. The woman grew sick throughout the excursion, and she eventually admitted to Pino that she was carrying a child.

Pino suggested that she leave her violin, and when she objected, he carried it himself. He carefully led the group uphill where the threat of an avalanche forced them to tread lightly. Further up the dangerous mountain, they came across a whiteout. Mimo fell into the thick snow which opened a chute, drawing him in and burying him in more snow.
